I have been thinking about a parallel between the efforts of same-sex couples to gain the same rights as heterosexual couples and the struggle of women for the right to vote.
Perhaps it is because my grandmother died in 1919 at the age of 49, the year before she could vote.
What was the rationale that made it acceptable to throw garbage at women speakers? Some women were jailed, even raped, as the suffragettes fought 70 years for the right to vote, be educated and control their own inheritance.
Was it power and prejudice in the cloak of religion?
I am very disappointed that some legislators voted against equality in Maine. I offer thanks to those legislators who did support equality and freedom for all.
