Peacefully reposing in a big mud puddle in the alley just in the rear of Woolworth’s store, Phillip Nadeau of this city was awakened from his sound slumber Sunday morning at about 1:30 o’clock by Officer Hamilton who found him there while making the rounds of his beat. The man lay in several inches of mud and water and his face bore as much a look of contentment as if he had been reposing between a pair of clean sheets on a feather bed. The wagon was summoned and the man was allowed to finish his sleep on the soft side of a plank in one of the cells at the station.

Miss Cathy Sanderson of Auburn, a junior at the New England Conservatory of Music, was one of 100 students picked recently to sing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a presentation of Berlioz’s “Requiem,” at Symphony Hall. Charles Munch, conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra directed the performance, which was recorded by RCA Victor.

Miss Sanderson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Sanderson of 451 Court St.

Mid-State College of Auburn is awarding a $500 scholarship in memory of Ernest M. Shapiro, who died in March of 1983.

Shapiro was a prominent financial figure in Southern Maine and had been in the accounting profession for many years as head of the Ernest M. Shapiro Co. in Auburn. He was a past-president of the Maine Society of Public Accountants and was a charter member of the National Association of Accountants in the Southern Maine Chapter,

The scholarship will be awarded to a Lewiston or Auburn high school senior who will be entering Mid-State College to work for an associate’s degree in accounting.
