PORTLAND – A man accused of raping a New Hampshire teen was taken into custody Saturday afternoon hours before a national television program detailing his case was scheduled to air.

Officers from the Central Maine Violent Crimes Task Force arrested Robert L. Hanright, 38, of Allentown, N.H., at 3:15 p.m. Saturday in Portland, outside of a Cumberland Avenue apartment building.

“He was arrested without any incident at all,” said Chris Clifford, deputy U.S. Marshal and head of the task force. “I think he was just too surprised to put up much of a fight. We had two officers waiting at the exit and they grabbed him as he left.”

Lewiston officers David Levesque and Adam Higgins, members of the taskforce, made the arrest.

Hanright is accused of an Aug. 1 rape of a 15-year-old girl in an Allentown apartment. According to police, the girl was staying in Hanright’s apartment. He is accused of drugging her, raping her and redressing her. She notified police the next day.

The story aired on “America’s Most Wanted” Saturday night, after Hanright’s arrest. Clifford said WMUR-TV, a New Hampshire television station, aired a story about the “America’s Most Wanted” program on Friday night.

“We had a person contact New Hampshire police Friday night,” Clifford said. “They saw the news report and pulled up the ‘Americas Most Wanted’ Web site, and they knew the guy.”

Hanright is in Cumberland County Jail awaiting extradition to New Hampshire, Clifford said.

His police record includes arrests in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Illinois. His police record lists a prison escape and an assault on a police officer, as well as other sex-related crimes, according to police.
