LEWISTON – The Gen. George Armstrong Post 7, Grand Army of the Republic Association, will hold a Civil War memorial service at noon Saturday, May 28, at the gravesite of Stephen L. Mariner, a Lewiston native who died at age 20.

He was serving with the 31st Maine Infantry Regiment during the Civil War when he was captured and died in the Confederate Salisbury Prison, N.C., in 1864. Mariner is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Summer Street.

Invocation will be led by Jerry DerBoghosian, chaplain, Post 9150, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Those assembled will sing the “Star Spangled Banner” followed by reading of General Order No. 11 by the order of John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, setting May 30, 186,8 as Decoration Day.

“The Battle Hymn of the Republic” will be sung before the reading of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Richard Giem, commander, Post 22, American Legion, will read a Civil War poem, and Larry Mayes, historian, Post 9150, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will present a Civil War history.

The history of Custer Post 7, GAR, will be presented by DerBoghosian, chairman, Custer Post 7, GAR Association. “Taps” will be played with the placing of a wreath on Mariner’s tombstone.
