AUBURN – Two World War II-era bombers will be on display at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport from Monday, Sept. 20, to Wednesday, Sept. 22.
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator have been restored to exacting 1944 condition.
Also on hand as a special treat will be a Chance-Vought F4U-5NL Corsair, the well-known bent-wing fighter of WWII and Korea made famous by the television series “Black Sheep Squadron.”
Flights will be offered and people will be allowed to tour the aircraft for a small donation. All positions aboard the aircraft are accurately restored with the original instruments, gun positions and equipment.
The display will take place at the Twin Cities Air Service ramp at the Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport.
The planes are scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. Monday and to be on display through 5:30 p.m. that day.
On Tuesday, they will be available from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour tour was established as a living history exhibit to promote awareness of World War II and to honor the veterans who fought in it. The planes fly to more than 120 cities nationwide.
The Auburn event is being sponsored by Twin Cities Air Service. The Collings Foundation is a nonprofit educational foundation based in Stow, Mass.
It was created to promote learning and education through interactive methods using a hands-on approach.
