AUBURN – Former youth baseball and basketball coach Michael Johnson was indicted Tuesday for the second month in a row on charges of sexual abuse involving young girls.

The 38-year-old was charged by an Androscoggin County grand jury with a total of 12 new counts, bringing his total to 38.

This most recent round of charges includes sexual abuse of a minor, patronizing prostitution of a minor and aggravated unlawful furnishing of marijuana.

Johnson, who lives at 650 Empire Road in Poland, was arrested March 8 for allegedly hunting for girls in Kennedy Park, giving them booze and marijuana, then convincing them to dance nude and have sex with him for money at his home.

While investigators were searching his home and his computer in March, they claimed to have found new evidence of further criminal activity involving other victims.

Those findings resulted in 20 new charges – eight last month and 12 this month – of promoting prostitution, providing alcohol and drugs to minors and disseminating sexually explicit materials on the Internet.

Johnson’s alleged conduct involves several victims and spans nearly two decades.

His legal woes began last year when he was charged with seven counts of rape. Those charges are the result of allegations made by three women who claim Johnson sexually abused them in the 1980s.

At the time, the women were under 14 years old. They claim they met Johnson at the YMCA in Auburn, where he worked as a volunteer coach and was involved with a leadership group for young teens more than 10 years ago.

The women, now in their late 20s and early 30s, have said they decided to finally come forward and pursue their allegations after hearing rumors that Johnson was still chasing young girls.

Police have been investigating Johnson ever since, digging up new information and handing it over to the district attorney’s office to be presented to grand juries.

Assistant District Attorney Deborah Potter Cashman said the indictment handed up Tuesday will likely be the last round of charges to be pressed against Johnson.

In spite of the increasing number of charges, Johnson has remained free on bail. In December 2003, he pleaded innocent to the seven counts of rape. Then, last May, he pleaded innocent to the charges of plying teens with liquor and pot.

He is scheduled to enter pleas on the remaining charges Friday afternoon in Androscoggin County Superior Court.
