SHREWSBURY, Mass. (AP) – Three family members – including a child – were killed Monday when their minivan rolled over on a rain-slicked highway after the driver changed lanes to avoid spray from other vehicles.

The van carrying six people was headed to Connecticut around 10 a.m. when the driver, Tereza Pires, 38, of Acton, changed lanes to avoid the spray from other vehicles, according to state Trooper Tom Ryan. She lost control of the van and it rolled several times, witnesses told police.

Pires was killed, along with her 71-year-old mother, Maria Gondim, and Pires’ 8-year-old daughter, Luisa, all of Acton.

Another daughter, 4-year-old Barbara Pires, was in critical condition at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with head injuries.

Mauro Pires, Tereza’s husband and the girls’ father, was in stable condition. Adolfo Paes-Rezende, 14, a family friend also from Acton, was also in stable condition at UMass Memorial.

Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Ryan said weather was a factor in the crash and all the occupants were wearing the proper restraints. There were no indications that drugs or alcohol were involved, he said.
