AUBURN – Greater Androscoggin Humane Society Shelter Manager Kathie Grenier was presented a donation on Feb. 14 courtesy of three University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College staff members.
Jim Bradley of Lewiston, Debi Brown of Turner and Pauline Pierre of Greene organized a pet food drive at the campus to help the Humane Society care for and provide shelter to the thousands of unwanted animals the shelter takes in each year. Pet toys, food, treats and a $10 cash donation were just a few of the items collected from the staff, faculty and students.
The Humane Society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area a year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fund-raising events and donations of concerned residents.
The shelter gives back through community services, including animal intake and adoption, animal health services, reuniting people with lost animals, humane education and working with individuals who are disadvantaged or developmentally disabled. The shelter serves 11 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a total population of more than 90,000 people.
The society, located at 3312 Hotel Road, is in the middle of a Capital Campaign to build a new shelter. If interested in helping, call 786-4713. Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can visit the shelter or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
