OSCEOLA, Fla.–The University of Maine dropped a pair of softball games today, as the Black Bears (5-4) lost to Army 6-3 in a noon matchup before falling to Bucknell 6-1 in the late game.

Army jumped out to a commanding lead, scoring six runs in the third inning.

Molly McKinney and Brittany Cheney continued to supply the power for the Bears as McKinney went 3-for-4 and Cheney added a pair of singles in the loss.

The nightcap saw the same result with Bucknell limiting Maine to one run.

Men’s lacrosse

Trinity 9, Bates 2

HARTFORD, Conn. — James Skiff tallied a hat trick and added an assist to lead Trinity College to a 9-2 win over Bates College in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Colby Smith (two goals) tallied the game-winner with 11:27 left in the second frame as the game was never in doubt with the Bantams taking a 6-1 lead after the first half.

The Bobcats’ goals came from Peter Friedman at 6:56 of the second period and Brad Frost who found the back of the net in the final period to account for the final score.

Middlebury 9, Colby 5

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Mike Saraceni had one goal and four assists to pace top-ranked Middlebury College to a 9-5 victory over Colby College in men’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Panthers (2-0) scored two unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead over the White Mules (1-1) at halftime.

The White Mules did not regain any steam in the third quarter as the Panthers notched another four unanswered goals.

Track

Whitney sets

1,550 meter record

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Senior middle distance runner Darryl Whitney of the University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field team set a school record in the 1,500-meter run Saturday while competing at the 2003 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Tack and Field Championships held at Depaw University.

Colby College junior Karima Ummah of Litchfield tied her own school record in the high jump, but Geneseo State freshman Kim Deprez had the biggest leap of the day in winning the competition at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at DePauw University.

Ummah earned All-America honors for finishing second place with her leap of 5-7, a high jump that tied her school record.

Bates College women’s indoor track and field team sent two of its’ best to the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University this weekend and both are returning with All-America awards.

Junior thrower Liz Wanless finished second in the shot put with a mark of 50-0.

Senior distance runner Kelley Puglisi finished sixth in the 1,500 meter run.

Bowdoin 9,

Merchant Marine 1

HOMESTEAD, Fla.–Bowdoin College erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ricky LeClerc blasted a three-run triple to break the game wide open as the Polar Bears handed the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy a 9-1 setback in men’s baseball action Saturday afternoon.

Manny Lora went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the fifth inning to compliment LeClerc’s outburst.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin 3, Middlebury 0

BRUNSWICK — Britney Carr snuck a wrist shot through the pads of Katie Madouras late into the first period to provide the only goal needed as Bowdoin shutout Middlebury 3-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (22-1-3) traded chances in a scoreless second period before having to kill off an early third-period penalty.

Upon returning to full strength, Bowdoin improved its lead when Gillian McDonald pounced on Kristi Anderson’s rebounding shot to go upstairs on the Panther (19-3-4) goalie. After the Panthers pulled their goalie, Anderson clinched the win with an empty-netter.
