1926 – 2015

AUBURN — Irene Stone, 89, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

She was born in Lewiston on Feb. 16, 1926, the daughter of William H. and Mildred Cook Walsh. She attended Lewiston schools and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1943. She later graduated from Central Maine Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.

She was employed in private-duty nursing and health instruction at Poland Spring Job Corps. She later retired from the State of Maine, Department of Human Services, Division of Public Health Nursing in 1986. Irene was also active in extension service and served as a co-leader of the Busy Beavers 4-H club for many years.

She was predeceased by her late husband, Willard Stone, whom she married on Nov. 2, 1947. They lived on Megquier Hill in Poland for 60 years, raised their two children there and enjoyed many summers basking in the sun on their dock at Thompson Lake. Irene and Willard also enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Florida and Alaska, to name a few.

She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Vivian; grandchildren, Jason Sayler, Eric Sayler, Aaron Sayler, Ann Stone-Doyon, Carol Stone, Jillian Pendexter and David Stone Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren, Brent Buck, Adam Stone, Alana Buck, Hunter Sayler, Elizabeth Sayler, Alicia Sayler, Garrett Pendexter, Drew Sayler, Emily Stone, Gavin Willard Sayler, KK and Noah.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Monuge; sister, Louise Stretton; and a great-granddaughter, Sasha Stone.
