Supper, bake sale

LEWISTON — The 100 Pine Street Wellness and Recovery Center will hold a public spaghetti supper and bake sale from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Proceeds will be used to provide services such as meals, laundry facilities, social activities and networking opportunities for persons in recovery from persistent mental illness and substance abuse.

Auction benefits vet

WINTHROP — A silent auction will be held to benefit Jeremy Gilley, a young veteran who lost both his legs after being pinned between two cars when he stopped to help a crash victim.

Veterans Post 40 Auxiliary is offering one week of summer camp at the YMCA camp in Winthrop for summer 2012. A $500 value, the bidding starts at $250, by calling 329-8325. Bidding ends March 3 at 7 p.m. sharp.

Cancer costs

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free financial management workshop for cancer survivors and caregivers. “Managing the Costs of Living with Cancer: Financial and Community Resources” will take place Wednesday, March 7 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at CMMC, 12 High St., Conference Room A.

A panel of experts will address issues such as medical costs, Social Security disability benefits and financial and community resources questions and more. The panel includes Sophy Chan, technical expert for the Social Security Administration; Michelle Duplissis, financial counselor at CMMC, and Karen DeGrandpre, oncology social worker at CMMC.

LEWISTON — Central Maine Bariatric Surgery will host an informational program about weight loss surgery on Wednesday, March 7.

Bariatric surgeons and other members of the bariatric surgery program’s professional staff will provide a general overview of obesity and weight loss surgery options. The program will include a question and answer session.

The program will be held in the Chairmen’s Rooms on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building from 6 to 8 p.m.

There is no charge for participation.

LEWISTON — Great Falls Dog Obedience Club will start another six-week dog obedience class Wednesday, March 7. Dogs and puppies must be at least 3 1/2 months old and vaccinated. Plumbing course

AUBURN — The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District will be hosting a septic system training for Local Plumbing Inspectors and people seeking certification. This workshop will be held at the Auburn City Hall on March 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course will offer a thorough explanation of the permitting, inspection and enforcement of the State of Maine’s Subsurface Wastewater Disposal Rules and the Internal Plumbing Rules. This session will primarily be of interest to local plumbing inspectors, but is open to all, including site evaluators and system installers.

Diet and proper nutrition are vital tools in the fight against colon cancer. Presenter Jill Young, CMMC oncology dietitian, will discuss rapidly accumulating evidence supports eating a healthy diet for both prevention and treatment.
