BROWNFIELD — The driver critically injured Tuesday when his vehicle crashed and burst into flames on Center Conway Road was identified Wednesday as Robert Wallstrom, 60, of Brownfield.
Wallstrom suffered life-threatening injuries and is listed in critical condition, according to a written statement by Oxford County Sheriff Christopher Wainwright.
A 2018 Subaru Forester operated by Wallstrom was traveling east near the New Hampshire border when it went off the right side of the road. Wallstrom apparently overcorrected, crossed the centerline and went off the road on the left side, Wainwright said.
The vehicle struck a large rock, which vaulted it into trees. It landed nose down and burst into flames.
According to an earlier statement, Wallstrom was transported via LifeFlight to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As the blaze engulfed the vehicle, Wallstrom was on fire, but managed to get out of the wreckage on his own. A nearby resident dragged him to safety and extinguished the flames, Wainwright said.
“The good Samaritan … stayed with him until emergency personnel arrived on scene,” the sheriff said. “The actions of the good Samaritan, without a doubt, saved the life of the individual involved.”
Investigators are trying to determine if excessive speed or intoxicants were involved in the crash.
First responders included the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Fryeburg Rescue, Brownfield Fire Department and Conway Police and Fire departments.
