A Lewiston woman was still in the hospital and listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon after she was badly injured in a three-car crash on U.S. Route 202 in East Winthrop one day earlier.
A spokeswoman for Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said the woman, Deborah Salvador, 67, was listed in “serious condition.” The spokeswoman couldn’t describe the extent of Salvador’s injuries because of patient privacy laws.
Police say that the crash happened near the East Winthrop post office, after a compact sport utility vehicle that Salvador was driving in the east bound lane hit the back of a pick up truck that was stopped and waiting to turn left into the post office.
The impact forced the truck into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a Toyota Camry headed in the opposite direction. All three vehicles were destroyed.
The only person with serious injuries was Salvador, who had to be extricated from her 2010 Chevrolet HHR.
The busy road was closed for part of Monday afternoon as police and rescue workers responded to the crash and reconstructed the scene. Traffic was diverted onto Old Village Road.
Police are still investigating the wreck and haven’t determined its cause, said Sgt. John Hall of the Winthrop Police Department on Tuesday afternoon.
“We’re probably two-thirds of the way done with the investigation,” Hall said.
