BETHEL — The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce will no longer host the Maine State Triathlon “due to declining participation in the event and changes within the organization,” according to a newsletter.
The event featured athletes competing in swimming, cycling and running on a loop that included Route 5 and Vernon Street, beginning and ending at the Bethel Inn’s Lake House on Songo Pond.
“We apologize to our loyal competitors who have looked forward to this event each year,” the notice said. “We thank all who have helped with and enjoyed the event over the 26-year run — competitors, volunteers, sponsors, prize donors, community members and local businesses. And especially, much gratitude to The Bethel Inn Resort and the Mac and Nancy Davis family, who offered their spaces as race headquarters. We are very proud of our successful run, but it’s a wrap!”
BACC Executive Director Jessie Perkins said, “Many participants have offered thanks and shared that it was their favorite race and/or that it launched successful triathlon careers.”
She added her thanks to Songo Pond area residents, “many of whom have volunteered to help keep competitors safe and cheer them on over the years.”
