Cold and windy weather didn’t stop Twin Cities children from canvassing their neighborhoods looking for treats on Halloween.
With parents in tow, children stopped at houses with the coolest decorations and best goodies, some excitedly sharing with friends, “Oh, this house always has the best stuff!”
Most parents followed closely as children rang doorbells and responded to homeowners with, “Trick or treat.”
The Lenhert family included 1-year-old cousins Teddy and Jeffrey dressed as Harry and Lloyd from the movie “Dumb and Dumber.” They had a red wagon disguised as a Mutt Cutts car.
Another family of nearly 10 included 5-year-old Catherine Ferriter dressed as a princess and “part Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle,” according to her father.
Children weren’t the only ones having fun Monday. People giving out candy were excited to see so many costumed treat-seekers out with their families.
And some were praised for their elaborate decorations.
Theresa Roy, who has lived at 336 Bates St. for 42 years, has always decorated for Halloween. Her lawn was covered with inflatable Vampire Mickey and Witch Minnie Mouse, light-up skeletons and jack-o’-lanterns, and a spooky Grim Reaper leading a pumpkin carriage.
“We go bigger for Christmas,” she said, and gave credit to her daughter for all of the decorating.
“It’s been a slow start,” she said of the trick-or-treating. “I’ve usually gotten more kids than this.”
Chilling cemetery scenes were also popular this year. On Davis Street, at least four houses had yards fully covered with fake headstones and skeletons.
BreAnne Penley-Theis and her family had their large front lawn fenced in as a graveyard complete with fog, lights, and what she called her “zombie box,” a screen with animated zombies attempting to crawl out.
A house nearby had headstones scattered across the yard with witty engravings, including, “Here lies Roger, jolly once too often,” and, “Here lies Mozart, decomposing.”
Other notable costumes included a boy wearing a cardboard box with a “Tin of Fish Oil” logo drawn on it, two girls dressed as senior citizens, complete with walking canes, and an inflatable green slime ghost from “Ghostbusters.”
