What is the most pressing problem in your district and what do you plan to do about it?

Economic growth, including infrastructure, remains a critical issue in my district. My constituents need a government that focuses its spending and restrains its reach in order to reduce taxes and streamline business regulations. I intend to continue to fight for a significant decrease in Maine’s personal and business income taxes.

Gov. Paul LePage wants to eliminate the state income tax. Do you support that? If not, why not?

Yes. Maine competes with 49 other states, including our next door neighbor, New Hampshire, for people and businesses. Eliminating the income tax would be a plus for Maine. We made some progress by eliminating the income tax on military pensions and survivors’ benefits.

Are you willing to support raising the fuel tax to fix Maine roads? If not, why not?

No, not unless we simultaneously reduce other taxes on the people of Maine who are are overtaxed as it is.

The relationship between the governor and the Legislature has deteriorated over the past six years. What can the Legislature do to improve that relationship?

I don’t agree with the premise of your question. The federal and state constitutions created a natural “pull and tug” when it created three, co-equal branches of government. Each branch has a job to do and the best way to maintain a good working relationship is to do your job.

What methods do you support to reduce opiate addiction in Maine?
I support an emphasis on treatment for addiction and a broader education effort in our schools. We should also stiffen penalties for selling and trafficking in order to raise the price of doing this foul business in Maine.
