PARIS — A West Paris man charged with felony sexual assault pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning at his arraignment in Oxford County Superior Court.
John Emery, 70, was arrested in May and charged with gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact against a child under the age of 14.
It was Emery’s first court appearance since May, when he was indicted on the charges.
The initial complaint of an assault was reported to the Department of Health and Human Services on April 28. An investigation was begun that day by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Detective Joshua Wyman, the day after the complaint was made, the child was interviewed and said Emery had been assaulting the child for years, perhaps since the age of 3.
According to Wyman’s affidavit, after each assault, Emery would “go to his gun cabinet or make a threat that he was going to his gun cabinet and grab a gun and make threats to harm himself,” according to the victim.
