LEWISTON — A race car driver hospitalized after crashing at Oxford Plains Speedway was listed in good condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Christina Spaulding, 41, of Lisbon was in one of six cars in the first of two heats in the Ladies Division of the NAPA Oxford Acceleration Series on Wednesday night shortly after the race got underway.

The crash occurred at 7 p.m. on the front stretch of the racetrack where Spaulding’s daughter, Breeanna, was dueling for the lead with another car. Christina Spaulding clipped the back of her daughter’s car and spun into the wall, according to Oriana Lovell, a freelance writer who covers sports for the Advertiser Democrat in Norway and who was attending the race.

Christina Spaulding’s husband, Richard, ran across the infield to her car moments after the crash, Lovell told the Sun Journal.

According to Lovell, track paramedics were unable to get Spaulding out of her car, and Oxford Fire and Rescue was called and used hydraulic equipment to take apart the car to free her.

According to Lovell, Spaulding was in and out of consciousness after she was freed from the wreckage, and was rushed by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston at 8 p.m.

Oxford Police Chief Jonathan Tibbetts said Thursday the incident was investigated as a workplace injury due to Spaulding sustaining a head injury, and his investigation is complete.
