TOPSHAM — Hooked wall pieces inspired by master paintings are on view at Maine Fiberarts through Dec. 31.
A reception for the exhibition will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Maine Fiberarts, 13 Main St. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
The exhibition, “Hooked Wall Pieces Inspired by Master Paintings and Art for the Neck,” includes 60 works by 22 Maine artists. Beautiful and fanciful hooked wall pieces were inspired by master paintings by van Gogh, Botticelli, Gaugin, Matisse, Klimpt, Picasso and others. Also on display are a wide variety of creations to wrap around the neck: woven, knitted, stitched, collaged and felted using wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, acrylic, paper and alpaca. All items are offered for show and for sale as part of the holiday sale. A preview of the work may be seen online at www.mainefiberarts.org
One member of Maine Fiberarts who occasionally gallery sits was working on a hooked wall piece inspired by Paul Gaugin. It turns out the artist, Janet Conner, also had work inspired by van Gogh’s “Cypresses” and “Starry, Starry Night.” Artist Arlene Morris, who often gathers work for Maine Fiberarts’ shows, thought that hooked rugs created after master paintings might be a fun theme for a show. Rug hooker Roslyn Logsdon was approached with the idea and responded, “Oh! I have a Picasso.” Other pieces soon followed. Some work was created for the theme; others had been in the works and were completed in time for the show.
Artists who have work in this show include Arlene Morris; Barbara Taylor; Chris Antonak; Christine Macchi; Crystal Cawley; Elizabeth Berkana; Elizabeth Stoyko; Emi Ito; Janet Conner; Jill Snyder Wallace; Kathleen Perkins Bird; Kristi Sandoy; Linda Clutterbuck; Marie Phillippon; Patricia Ringston; Paul Hollingsworth; Priscilla Nicholson; Rachael Conner; Roslyn Logsdon; Sue Kuendig; Sue Perless; and Sybil Shiland.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. FMI: www.mainefiberarts.org.
