AUGUSTA (AP) — A Fayette man has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing rolls of copper wire from a state Transportation Department work site.

Shawn Michaud was also sentenced Tuesday to pay more than $7,000 in restitution.

Authorities say the 35-year-old Michaud stole the wire last September in Augusta and sold it as scrap.

The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1E56ZbI ) reported that police identified Michaud as a suspect because his probation officer indicated Michaud had been selling a lot of copper wire at a recycling center.

When police went Michaud’s apartment, they found scraps of wire similar to the stolen wire, as well as an empty spool in his bedroom and another in the trash outside.
