LITCHFIELD — A storage building on Richmond Road burned flat Wednesday afternoon as firefighters plowed through deep snow to reach it.
Crews from Litchfield, Monmouth, Wales, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Richmond and other towns went to 482 Richmond Road at about 4 p.m. after an off-duty firefighter saw smoke rising from the the long, aluminum-roofed building.
An official from the Office of the State Fire Marshal said the building, used mainly for storage, had been closed for the winter. To reach it, firefighters had to get plows to push away deep snow that blocked their access to it.
The name of the building owner was not available Wednesday night. By 8 p.m., fire officials were still investigating the cause. There were no signs of criminal action, one official said.
The building contained vehicle parts and tools, firefighters said. No one was hurt battling the blaze.
People in nearby towns reported they could see the smoke from the fire from miles away, including one woman who spotted it from Goff Hill in Auburn.
The building that burned is across from Gowell’s store and a short distance from Huntington Hill Road.
