FRYEBURG — The police chief in Fryeburg has resigned.

Fryeburg town manager Sharon Jackson tells WMWV-FM Chief Phil Weymouth was put on administrative leave April 17 and resigned his position Monday.

Jackson says she appointed Detective Sgt. Josh Potvin as acting police chief when Weymouth was put on leave.

Jackson declined to provide details about why Weymouth was put on leave. Weymouth could not immediately be reached to comment.

Recently, Weymouth had been soliciting input from residents about possible interest in building a public safety building that would house his department, the fire department and the nonprofit Fryeburg Rescue.

Weymouth replaced Wayne Brooking as Fryeburg police chief in September 2008. Previously, Weymouth was the Rangeley police chief.
