OXFORD — SAD 17 directors unanimously voted Monday night to extend Superintendent Rick Colpitts’ contract for a year, to 2017.

The vote followed an executive session with Colpitts.

A discussion of salary and benefits will not be made until his contract is renegotiated. Colpitts’ annual salary is now $111,661.

Colpitts met with the Personnel Committee to review a draft of the board’s evaluation of him prior to the meeting. Then, directors and the superintendent met in executive session to discuss the evaluation. Each party participates in the evaluation process, which is done in both ranking and essay form.

The board evaluates the superintendent on issues such as goals and how well they are met. The evaluation is not not considered public record, but rather part of the superintendent’s personnel file, Colpitts said.

Superintendents are hired for specific terms, not exceeding five years. The term of office for any superintendent ends on June 30, with the year to be specified by board vote. Statute requires all superintendents to be evaluated by the end of each year.

Colpitts was appointed superintendent in 2010, succeeding Mark Eastman who retired after holding the post for 15 years. In May of that year, the directors gave Colpitts a three-year contract with an annual salary of $103,000.

The board has voted to extend the contract by one year each of the following years.
