So serious that, growing up, one of the people she admired was a dental hygienist. So serious that she recently opened her own practice as an independent dental hygienist.
So serious that she and her new husband spent their honeymoon renovating her new office.
Which is pretty darn serious.
Name: Lisa-Marie A. Sasseville (no not Presley)
Age: 47 but 21 in my own mind
Married/relationship/single: Married. Newly wed Sept. 1. We spent our honeymoon renovating our new office. Not even kidding a little.
Job: Owner of Sasseville Healthy Smile Dental Hygiene & Wellness; independent dental hygienist; Navy corpsman reservist.
What attracted you to a career in teeth? My dad was a dentist, and when I was little I always liked playing in his office. I also really admired his dental hygienist.
How long have you been a dental hygienist? 13-and-a-half years.
Why open your own practice? I wanted to open up my own practice because I feel I can personalize preventative oral health and overall health easier on my own, and make it more affordable.
What’s the difference between a dental hygienist and a dentist? A dental hygienist is a licensed professional who can perform preventative procedures in the oral cavity — either independently or under the supervision of a dentist — including teeth cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments, oral cancer evaluations, and education on how to avoid periodontal disease and cavities. A dentist is a person who is also an expert in preventative measures, but is additionally licensed to diagnose and treat diseases of the teeth and mouth, and do restorative work as well as advanced procedures such as root canals and orthodontics.
You also do nutritional counseling? Yes, I have a strong background in fitness and nutrition and I’ve been a Shaklee Whole Health Supplement advisor for about 10 years.
You have an office-mate who will offer facials. Facials? I do have a licensed aesthetician who rents space to do teeth whitening and facials, etc. We are dental hygiene and overall wellness! Feel and look great from the inside and out!
What’s the No. 1 thing people aren’t doing for their teeth that they should? Floss, floss and more floss.
What’s the No. 1 thing people should stop doing? People should stop smoking or using any tobacco products, and drinking sugary drinks.
Fruitcake — dental peril or yummy holiday foodstuff? Fruitcake, definitely yummy holiday foodstuff, but just brush and floss after.
Lisa-Marie Sasseville is a dental hygienist with her own practice on East Avenue in Lewiston.
