OXFORD – Fifty-five sixth-grade students from Oxford Elementary School will leave Wednesday morning to spend three days in Acadia National Park at a marine science camp.

School Principal Kim Ramharter informed SAD 17 directors Monday night that the annual trip to Schoodic Point for the marine science education program is on following the recent federal government shutdown.

The Schoodic Education and Research Center Institute co-manages the center with Acadia National Park, which was closed from Oct. 2-17.

“We didn’t know we were going,” said teacher Ruth Wilson who will join teachers Nancy Philbrook and Sandra Roderick for the trip with students.

Students have been attending the marine science camp each year. It offers unique hands-on, curriculum-based activities, including the study of ocean ecosystems and watersheds, water cycle, tide pools, geology and some language arts studies.

“It’s jammed pack,” Wilson said.

The weather forecast suggests there may be some cold weather during the trip but Wilson said it’s no problem.

“We’ve had snow before,” she said.
