WELD — Voters will be asked during a special town meeting Monday if they want authorize municipal officers to spend up to $20,000 to buy accounting software for the town. The money would come from the Tree Growth penalty account.

There is currently $37,652 in the account.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Town Hall.

TRIO Accounting Software meets generally accepted accounting systems practices and government audit standards, Town Clerk Carol Cochran said.

The software is more efficient with less redundancy and provides double-entry bookkeeping. It also provides for more efficient audits and better response time, she said.

The software should also keep audit service expenses in check, she said.

The software is recommended by the auditor and is the most used and respected system in Maine, she said. Many towns around the area use it, including Farmington, Peru, Dixfield, Rangeley, Wilton, Kingfield and Phillips.

The company keeps abreast of new initiatives, regulations requirements and mandates and updates the software for compliance, Cochran said.

The current town software was developed by a local peron.

“We are totally reliant on one individual for all updates and maintenance,” she said. “TRIO has excellent support services.”

In other meeting news, the registrar of voters will be available at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall to register new voters and to correct the check list.
