1934 – 2013
LEWISTON – Phyllis Jackson, 79, of Weld, died Tuesday afternoon, June 11, 2013 at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
She was born on Jan. 2, 1934 in Weld, a daughter of Loren Eric and Vera (Safford) Whitney. She attended local schools, graduating from Weld High School. On Oct. 31, 1954, she married Clifford Jackson in Carthage. He died on Nov. 15, 2005.
Phyllis was a homemaker and mother. Being a wife and mother was very important to her. When she worked outside the home, she did so as a telephone operator in Weld, at the Cornwall Wood Mill in Weld and she also cleaned camps for the summer residents of Weld. She worked for many years for the Rand Stowell family, doing housekeeping and caring for their children. Family and people in town knew they could call on “Phee” to help with cleaning projects, wallpapering and provide respite care for children or elderly.
She was a member of the Rainbow Girls, Franklin County Extension, American Legion Auxiliary, Weld Congregational Church, the Weld Historical Society and Order of the Eastern Star.
Phyllis enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, reading, puzzles, ice-cream parties and especially spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her willingness to help and for her generosity as well as for her sense of humor, her quick wit and for being a prankster.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Berry and her companion, Joseph Knox of Weld, Lavorne Jackson of Rumford, Drucilla Mitchell and her companion, Ronald Dickey of Perry, Fla. and Crystal Fitch and her husband, Bryan of Freeman Twp.; a sister, Joyce Merchant of Chesterville; sisters-in-law, Peggy Whitney of Bangor, Priscilla Marquis and her husband, Robert of Chesterville and Louise DiConzo of Dixfield; a brother-in-law, Donald Jackson of Jay; 10 grandchildren, Carl, TJay, Todd, Theresa, Jake, Billy, Cam, Bianca, Kyle and Misty; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, children, Sherry and Jay Jackson and brothers, Clifford and Cloyd Whitney and Lewis Safford.
Words of condolence and tribute may be shared with her family and friends on her tribute wall at www.wilesrc.com.
