Trout Unlimited meeting Jan. 23

PARIS — The Jan. 16 meeting of the Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited which was postponed by the recent snowstorm has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 23. The meeting will still feature a fly-tying demonstration and talk by Greg Ponte.

Ponte is a former chairman of the Maine Council of Trout Unlimited and the recipient of the 2012 Mortensen Award, TU’s highest honor. The subject of his talk will be the Maine TU Trout Camp, which he helped found.

The public is invited to attend and kids are encouraged to see the fly-tying demonstration. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Haskill House, 17 East Main St. The Haskill House is adjacent to the First Congregational Church located on Route 117, just south of Market Square.

Senior volunteers

PORTLAND — The Opportunity Alliance has openings in their Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteer programs with placements in York, Cumberland and southern Oxford counties.

By volunteering 15 or more hours a week, men and women age 55 and over can make a difference in someone’s life while having a great time and earning a little extra money. Foster Grandparents volunteer with children in schools, child development centers or in the home with a family. Senior Companions are friendly visitors to other seniors who are living independently in their own homes or attending an adult day program.

In return for volunteering, Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions who meet income guidelines receive a tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits that do not affect Social Security, food stamps, LIHEAP or subsidized housing eligibility.

Lake Christopher meeting Jan. 29

WOODSTOCK — The Lake Christopher neighborhood meeting with 4-H/UMaine camp director Ron Fornier will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Woodstock town office.

All are welcome to come, talk with Fornier, discuss the programs and activities at the camp and give input into neighborhood concerns. Call Jan Kendrick at 665-2233 for questions.

Winter picnic set for Feb. 2

SUMNER — A winter picnic featuring hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Congregational Church of East Sumner. Donations are requested.

Socrates Cafe: Ground water

WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Waterford Library. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

The topic for the February meeting will be, “Who controls our ground water?” The moderator is Earl Morse.
