DIXFIELD — The RSU 10 board accepted the resignation of Mountain Valley High School basketball coach, Rick White, at their meeting Monday night.

The board also heard plans for construction of an outdoor classroom at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, and approved a scholarship for Nezinscot region students in the name of Mary B. Wiley.

Basketball practice begins Nov. 21. High school Principal Matt Gilbert said Tuesday afternoon that the position will be posted for 10 days in the district. If no one suitable to fill the position has been identified, the position will be advertised.

Gilbert said White has coached varsity basketball for three or four years. He also is the assistant coach for the school’s football team, and coaches boys’ lacrosse.

Buckfield Junior-Senior High School Principal George Reuter told the board that the middle school has received a permit from the town to construct a 20- by 24-foot, open-sided classroom next to the school vegetable garden.

The $5,000 cost will be paid by a grant. Labor will be provided by parents and other community members.

In a related matter, Reuter said middle school students are also involved in learning entrepreneurial skills through a $3,000 grant from Maine Agriculture in the Classroom. He said students are working in teams to develop products and write business plans based on the garden.

The school’s garden, with advisers Gretchen Kimball and Annette Caldwell, has received numerous state and national awards for its work with students.

In other matters Monday, the board accepted administration and control of the Mary B. Wiley Scholarship from board Chairman Jerry Wiley.

The Nezinscot region annual scholarship will go to a student from Sumner, Buckfield or Hartford who attends a two-year or four-year college. Wiley said the scholarship is generally for $1,000.

Mary Wiley was Jerry Wiley’s wife, who worked in the former SAD 39 district for more than 10 years. Wiley set up the scholarship in 2000.

Also, Superintendent Tom Ward told the board the number of students enrolled as of Oct. 1 has remained constant at just under 2,800.
