SUMNER — Among the dozens of home businesses in this town of fewer than 900 residents are those featuring arts, agriculture, music, carpentry, auto repair and upholstery.

Artist Joel Babb built his studio at his home to capture the light needed for painting. He recently presented his latest works at on open house at the Vose Galleries in Boston.

Bob Perry works with wood in his basement shop. He organized the Streaked Mountain Wood Carvers and is a member of the New England Woodcarvers Inc. Perry started carving 30 years ago as a hobby while taking a bird carving class. His favorite wood to use is basswood.

Bob Runes also works with wood, making bowls, plates, vases, letter openers and lamp shades. He and his wife, Sue, also create mobiles, including ones made with wire and polished stones.

Marty Elkin and Mary Ann Haxton of A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm raise sheep and sell wool in their store. Started in the kitchen of their big farmhouse on Black Mountain Road, the business grew so much they erected a building for their crafts and classes in wool art and knitting.

The farm also sells produce, as do Sumner Valley Farm where Greg Broberg raises organic beef, Morrill Farm, Abbott’s maple syrup and Bragg’s maple syrup.

There are a number businesses in Sumner that officer repair services, including Bob Stewart of Valley Road Repair. He built his large garage 12 years ago to provide more space for his expanding business.

Doug Violet of Doug’s Tires on Gammon Road also does metal fabrication,  welding and small engine repairs. He also designs and builds “loggers” that can be pulled behind a small ATV to transport logs out of the woods and custom log splitters.

Jeff Abbott does welding from his home shop. Chet’s Welding is another welding home business.

Chuck Thornton hand crafts guitars for customers worldwide in his Sumner shop attached to his home.

Alan Osborn Upholstery is another home business in the dozens in town that also include garden designing, carpentry and income tax preparation.
