RUMFORD — Principals reported a slight growth in student enrollment for the four schools of the Mountain Valley region Monday night, bringing the area’s total to about 1,350 children.
The entire RSU 10 region has about 2,800 students.
A few more second-graders have also enrolled at the Hartford-Sumner Elementary School in the Nezinscot region, prompting the hiring of a third second-grade teacher.
The board met in the Mountain Valley High School library Monday night. The RSU 10 board generally makes the rounds of all schools in the district at least once during the school year.
HSES Principal Ryan Wilkins said the school now has an enrollment of 48 second-graders, which is too large a number for two teachers in that age group.
Superintendent Tom Ward said the resulting three second-grade classrooms will have 16 children each.
Besides hiring a third second-grade teacher, one of the original two teachers is expected to be out for at least six weeks, a situation that calls for hiring a long-term substitute, Ward said.
In the Mountain Valley region, an upsurge in the number of eighth-graders prompted the approval of a new position for Mountain Valley Middle School.
Kim Clark was appointed to the position that is expected to end at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year.
MVMS Principal Ryan Casey said his school now has an enrollment of nearly 320 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.
MVHS Principal Matt Gilbert said his school’s enrollment, of about 420 students, includes five foreign exchange students this year. They are from Denmark, Mexico, Cambodia and two from Germany.
Rumford and Meroby elementary schools each have just over 300 children.
In other matters, the board approved moving a teacher workshop day from March 22 to March 18 so that a nationally known expert on mass customized learning can be scheduled to speak to RSU 10 and Region 9 School of Applied Technology staff.
RSU 10, like many other districts in the state, is beginning to change over to individualized learning programs for students. This is known as mass customized learning.
Also on Monday:
* Former SAD 43 board member and current Rumford Selectman Jeff Stirling asked the RSU 10 board to consider the concept of regional budgets during the future development of school budgets.
* Buckfield board member Maida Demers-Dobson was appointed as Maine School Management Association delegate from RSU 10.
