Awareness of sexual violence
LEWISTON — With performances, information and poetry, the United Somali Women of Maine will host an event designed to raise awareness about sexual violence and to provide community members with appropriate resources from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, in Kennedy Park.
“Sexual violence is a problem in our communities,” said Fatuma Hussein, executive director of USWM. “There is often silence and lack of education about rape and sexual assault in the refugee and immigrant community and the larger Maine community. We are hosting this event because the first step toward ending sexual violence is to acknowledge the issue and talk about it.”
The event will include a performance by Asha Mohamud, the first Somali student to go to Bates College. The performance will focus on her experience as a refugee. The event will also include poetry, information about sexual violence and helpful resources.
“We want people to know that sexual violence happens here, but, more importantly, that it can be stopped and that there is help for those who need it,” said Hussein. “We know that given the strengths of the refugee and immigrant community and the greater L/A community, we can all work together to end sexual violence.”
