Basketball benefit
MEXICO — A yard sale and car wash to benefit Mountain Valley Eagles girls travel basketball teams will be held Saturday, May 15, behind the Mexico Fire Department. The yard sale starts at 8 a.m. and the car wash runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Class of 1950
RUMFORD — The Stephens High School Class of 1950 will meet for their monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 16, at The River Valley Grill.
Historical society
CARTHAGE — The Carthage Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, May 17, at the museum. There will be a 5:30 potluck supper with the meeting to follow. Everyone is reminded to bring their poems, stories, recipes and pictures for the newsletter.
Driving workshop
RUMFORD — Rumford Senior Citizens will sponsor an AARP driving workshop for seniors from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the senior center at 50 Congress St.
The cost is $14. Registration is required. All seniors are welcome to attend. Insurance rates will be discounted by state law for anyone taking this course.

Book signing
DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Historical Society is sponsoring a book signing event for local author Richard F. Mullins’ new book, “Evangeline,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Ludden Memorial Library. “Evangeline” is based on Longfellow’s epic poem which was published in 1847.
Hollywood Slots
RUMFORD — Rumford Senior Citizens’ next trip to Hollywood Slots in Bangor will be on Thursday, May 19. The cost is $25 per person. Sign up early; there are only 25 seats left. RSC is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Triad trip is June 24. This is a free trip for RSC members. Members are encouraged to sign up early for this trip also.

Japan benefit
BETHEL — Telstar High School Student Council is holding a dance-a-thon on Friday, May 20, to benefit those affected by the earthquake in Japan.
Class of 1963
MEXICO — The Stephens High School class of 1963 invites classmates, friends and family to attend the monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, at the Covered Wagon.
Princess party
RUMFORD — A princess party will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at American Legion. Come in your favorite princess dress. Have your nails and makeup done. There will be crafts, lunch, drawings, gift bags and a princess parade. The cost is $10.
There will also be a bake sale, raffles and pictures taken for a fee.
Proceeds will benefit the River Valley Relay of Cancer Crusaders Relay For Life. Tickets purchased in advance will get a free picture.

Democrats
BETHEL — The Oxford County Democrats will hold a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the Mill Hill Inn. Rosa Scarcelli of Portland will be the speaker as part of the Oxford County Democrat’s Rising Stars Series.
Scarcelli, a Wilton native, is best known for her impressive showing in the 2010 Maine Democratic Gubernatorial Primary. She is the CEO of Stanford Management and is a wife and mother of three children.
The reception will feature Mexican treats and has been arranged by the Bethel Area Democrats, headed by Mike Broderick. A donation of $10 is suggested, and to RSVP please email mikebroderick@roadrunner.com or call 824-6004.
