Motor traffic is to halt and pedestrians are to take shelter when the Civil Defense warning horns and other devices sound at 1:15 p.m. today, marking the start of public participation in Operation Alert 1959, the nation-wide CD test.
While the public participation will last only ten minutes, from 1:15 to 1:25 p.m., the exercise for CD personnel will extend over two days, with communication centers to be manned throughout the two days and other personnel busy working out problems resulting from a simulated bomb burst on a nearby prime target.

Joey Gamache Jr. of Lewiston was one of three Maine Golden Gloves champions to win opening night bouts Monday in the National Golden Gloves Boxing Championships. Gamache was a decisive victor over William Hurst, the Indiana Golden Gloves champion, in the 132-pound class. Bobby Wadleigh of Belfast won a close decision over Doug Westbrook of Hawaii in the 147-pound class and Jim McDonald, who just moved to Bridgton, won a decision over Bob Morgan of Kansas in the 106-pound division.
